In April,
we're celebrating the exciting world of dogsledding. Here's
a great book about what was once the world's most famous sled
dog!
The
Bravest Dog Ever: The True Story of Balto by Natalie Standiford
(New York: Random House Children's Publishing), 1989.
_______________
In January
1925, doctors realized that a deadly disease - diptheria -
was about to break out, attacking the children of Nome, Alaska.
The only medicine that could stop the outbreak was in Anchorage,
almost 2,000 kilometres away. No airplanes were available.
The only way to deliver the medicine was by sled dog.
The team
left from Anchorage, with more than 20 mushers eventually
taking part. Reporters relayed news of this dramatic race
to the world. On Feb. 2, 1925, Gunner Kaassen drove his heroic
dog team into the streets of Nome. In the lead was a husky
named Balto.
